WORKSHOPS
Dates: September 3 – 16, 2022, a 14-day photography workshop
Location: Morocco
Morocco is both a medley and a patchwork of culture, art,
language, and ideas. The history of this Saharan gateway
stretches back to ancient Phoenicia and Rome, then shifts
to control by Berbers and Arabs while drawing upon the
influence of Italian Moors, Spanish Andalusians, and later
French colonialism. This complex overlay is a mélange of
colors and patterns that are stunning, intriguing, and unique.
We explore this intricate weave of life and history as we
travel through great cities like Fes, Marrakech, Casablanca;
historic sites like Volubillis from Roman times and Meknes from
the 17th century; the renowned coastal city of Essaouira, the alpine
openness of the Atlas Mountains, and the vastness of the Sahara.
Filling the urban spaces are towering cones of spices,
trays of exotic dates, intricately woven Berber rugs,
red-sandstone, and blue-painted walls, rows of handmade
clay pots, honeycombs of tannery dyes, miniature colored
mosaic tiles, massive crenelated walls, and immense
hand-built mosques.
Grab your camera and get ready to join us as we explore
a part of the world with roots in Africa, branches in Europe,
and seeds of influence scattered throughout history and
across the modern world.

PAST WORKSHOPS

Hokkaido: Winter Photography
The Fire and Ice of Japan’s Frontier
Dates: February 2-16, 2020, a 15-day photo tour
Location: Japan
Hokkaido is Japan’s frontier, a sparsely populated island where ice
mixes with volcanic activity creating unique landscapes, ever-present
fog banks, and steaming hot springs…an aesthetic lure of minimalist
scenery. Winters bring cold weather from Siberia with staggering amounts
snowfall–an average of twenty-five feet in places! Red fox, fish, owls,
sea eagles, and Japan’s national symbol of longevity the red-crowned
crane are common.
For thousands of years, Hokkaido was the traditional home of the
Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan who still inhabit the area and keep
alive many of their ethnic traditions. Today, world-class cities, ski
slopes that rivals the best spots in the world and winter festivals
featuring stunning ice sculptures make the island a popular travel
destination.
Travel through this remarkable winter landscape with National
Geographic photographer and writer Michael Yamashita, and photographer
and adventure travel guide Jock Montgomery. With their guidance, create a
photographic journal that reflects the soul of Hokkaido in winter:
streets lined with giant snow banks, sleepy winter harbors, chaotic sea
ice, unspoiled nature with exotic wildlife, forests on vast hillsides of
snow and patterns and textures in infinite shades gray.
